Section 1.4 concludes

So, I got a little concerned with my schedule, so I pulled out a calculator and entered some digits...and I discovered that, at this point in time, I need to make at least 8 pages a week in order to have Unit 1 printed and available for Anime Expo.

INSERT MASSIVE PANIC ATTACK.

...Well, after regaining a bit of composure through a bit of deep breathing exercises and such, I walked myself through a bit of optimistic rationalization. Despite the fact that I've never been able to make 8 pages in a single week--the most I've done was 7 pages, back during the Predirection era, Section 1.6, where backgrounds were grossly minimal and attention to detail was sloppy at best--and that I have school and homework going on, not to mention my occasional fits of I-don't-want-to-do-anything-so-I'll-sleep-for-16-hours which seems to strike at random--despite all that, I told myself, HANS. GET YER ASS IN GEAR AND START DRAWING THIS WEEK'S PAGES. And so I did. And that's why I have 8 pages this week. Because I hate myself. Hurray! :D

...Granted half of them aren't toned yet, but that doesn't take a whole lot of time, and I WOULD do it right now except I should read my textbooks. ;O So I'll do it as soon as I get home from school, and it'll all be finished and uploaded by tonight, I promise! :D

And actually, surprisingly enough I've been able to keep up with my schoolwork and have a little time left over to dawdle about even though I just went through a week of doing the most pages I've ever done with the most detail I've ever bothered to care about in my life. And I feel pretty all right?? So with that said, I'll be doing 8 pages a week from now on. If I miss a week, you totally have permission to get mad at me, because after all, I'd be screwing myself over the most--I'm depending on the funds raised by the book sales to pay for part of my fees for studying abroad next year!! >3<

Whew, okay, I'm done rambling. :D() Go look at the pages! And comment! And check out my massive sketch dump of crap I did over the course of two sketchbooks over at my LJ art journal! And post in the forums!?! Annnd I'm out.

I looove these pages! The whole comedy part of it was cute, a change from the seriousness in the previous ones. ^_^ Though I'd have to say my favorite is the last page. It was so... thirlling? I can't really find the right word right now. ^_^ But it's a good thing. =)

Keep it up! I'm looking forward to the next 8 pages! ^_^

Hans. You rock. I love the update and the conclusion to section 1.4! [lessthanthree] [Blasted thing won't let me put hearts -.-;] Eight pages from now on? ^_^! Don't overexert yourself too much though. Everyone needs some form of relaxation during the week =P

I love you.
Need I say more?

Sweet! =D
Totally loved this week's update. Great art, great script, and was totally blown away by how many new pages we got! xD The new version of Zephan's realization of Azalea's mask is much better!
I am so totally looking forward to next Thursday! ^.^

And might I add that Zephan was the coolest I've seen him yet at the end of that section. -_~

No offense, but I thought your recent post was a little disappointing.

It was an abrupt change from Azalea's memory to having her wake up from passing out. I would have liked to see just what and why the tree was so important to her. You started it out great, with the little Azalea's back turned towards us and we see a shot of her mother, but it just unexpectedly changes to present time.

It would have flowed much better had you continued the scene and allow readers to get to know Azalea a little more. At this point, its a little confusing on the reader's part to have to think and wonder, "Wait, did I skip a few pages?"

Also, (no offense too) but right now, your characters lack reality,"pizzaz" and personality because we don't know much about them. While yes, you are just restarting your comic, try to build up each person's character a bit more, especially Azalea's. We already know she's shy and quiet and there's something about her. We want to know why! Azalea's brief memory is just the perfect thing! If you had wanted to span out her memories over the course of the comic, you could have done a better transition from the scene into Azalea waking up. It would DEFINTELY flow much, much better and not confuse readers. It gives your comic a sense of continuity and answers some questions, if not all.

Just some constructive critcism. Overall, your comic is deliciously illustrated and well planned. Try to bring up the character personality and step up the plot a bit more.

I am interested in seeing more!

P.S. On a different note, I thought Zephan acted cruel! Instead of acting "disillusioned" about Azalea, he looked more like he wanted to hit something. But in any case, he is your character to play with. ;)

Dang, Zephan is *hot* in these pages...

Posted by: Acey | Feb 16, 2006 6:32 PM

Um...Hans... I love you.
AMAZING pages this week. I love Zephan's angst and the character development. And whatever may or may not be going on with Azalea and Xin... And getting to read 8 pages was very pleasing. I'm glad that you're being so disciplined but don't overexert yourself!
Thank you Hans, we ♥ you!

I love Zephan. He has the exact same jealous streak I tend to see in myself. Everyone tends to see jealousy as bad, but it makes life a hell of a lot more interesting.

Hehe, loved Azalea spazzing out while trying to catch her ring too. Made me smile ^_^

Posted by: Kelly | Feb 17, 2006 1:12 AM

No offense, Belle, but that was, for the most part a wasted post. You basically said that he had done something wrong or off and then just...said it was..his choice? -That- is confusing as the way the story flows is always the artists choice, despite your views on the matter. Perhaps, if we consider for a moment, he simply wants to spread out character developement to keep readers interested and craving more or that this is a prequel to that exact thing. Personally, this is how I feel.

Noooow, onto the comic...
I don't usually post here, or on any of the other comics that I read for that matter but this update has moved me to that point. It was absolutely incredible. The comedy, the seriousness, and a page at the end that makes you wonder exactly what Zephan is thinking and if this could possibly change him in some way, which I can't wait to see by the way. I am equally stunned by the artwork and the detail put into the comic, not only in this section, of course.

If anyone is in any way truly offended by most post I am most certainly apologetic and meant it in no way as such and if you wish to respond, use my e-mail. I do not mind in the least.

Amazing update! Considering you updated a full 8 pages, the quality's realy good :D

Has the artwork or style changed from the first few versions of DoD though? I know the story has definately gone through a major twist from the previous versions, I feel that even the characters have changed a lot too. Azalea really fell apart, which is something I never expected her to do, I suppose that's important for Zephan to feel superior. Does anyone else feel a change?

Posted by: Ming | Feb 17, 2006 6:55 AM

Absolutley wonderful update. The artwork is just gorgeous. Hope to see another update next Thursday!

Posted by: katia | Feb 17, 2006 7:35 AM

Dragoon-
I appreciate your opinions and views. However, there is one thing I wish to clarify. I felt that he could have done a better transition from scene to scene, where as I believed that if he wished to protray his characters in a different way, then so be it. I only wished to see that he could have added a page or two more to give the comic a sense of continuity.

I did mention that Hans might have wanted to span out Azalea's memory and such, the only problem I felt was that the transition is abrupt. Something felt like it was missing.

Given, the artwork is beautiful, but that is not the only thing that contributes to the comic.

I am sorry if I had offended anyone. I only wanted to say how I felt.

Good job on those pages! I have a hard time finishing a one page mini comic. In the one pannel of the last page, Zephan sure does have long legs. And I mean, long, long, long, long legs. He really hates Azalea doesn't he? Kind of mean to have enjoyed that outbreak of hers. There was obviously something wrong. Oh well.

Posted by: Mouse | Feb 17, 2006 9:44 AM

Belle, it's not as abrupt as it may seem. If you read through 1.4, the transition seems almost natural. If you start at the new section and go back just a page and try to see a transition, it's not so good.

Posted by: Jeesiang | Feb 17, 2006 12:51 PM

Thank you Jeesiang, for the suggestion, and I have read through it. I still feel as though it is abrupt, but since a large of viewers seem to support the transition, then so be it.

I still believe Hans could have done better, given his great drawing abilities.

Hey now, y'all don't have to pick on Belle too much--after all, I'm sure we'd all be pretty pissed if we suddenly woke up from a nice dream. ;D With that said, Belle, I personally am completely satisfied with the transition--in all its abruptness--so despite that, I hope you'll bear with me a little longer and continue reading my comic. :D

Anyway, thank you everybody for all your comments and support! @_@ I'll try my very best to make the eight pages for next week as well!

good variety of personaliy and seriousnes. And dude! You put up like 7 pages or more! I love you! AS an artist!

Posted by: Sheeta thor | Feb 18, 2006 9:22 AM

Bravo Hans! Thats the longest update I've ever seen you do and yet the quality still remains intact! I was a little taken aback at first, seeing as the action of the scene is only spoken of, but Zephan's aside satisfies me more than enough. Great work, as always.

i love your comic, and i usually don't comment, but i found this : http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29195658/
and i kinda didn't think it was you who posted it, i really hate art theft and if that's the case i figured i'd say something about it.

I'm glad that you're getting into the characters, but I'm liking Zephan less now ^^. That's okay because it's so fun to read about the characters.

Posted by: lindi | Feb 19, 2006 5:39 PM

Oh no the two of you keep going. I wanna see a cat fight!

Posted by: Hanh | Feb 20, 2006 11:12 AM

Woohoo! Good job whoever is that annonymous person who found the ripped off artwork :)

Posted by: Ming | Feb 22, 2006 3:51 AM

im sad that some people didnt like the transition between the memeory and wakeing up. i think it add's mystery to the story and leaves the readers handing, which is GOOD THING by the way :D
trust me, im enough of a book worm to know good books from bad ones ^.^

oh, and-- I LOVE YOU HANS!! xD

Posted by: Ariel | Feb 22, 2006 7:08 PM
